Bare Spots in Your Lawn? Find the Cause Before You Throw Down Grass Seed

A bag of grass seed can cover a bare spot, but it cannot fix the reason the grass disappeared. If the underlying problem is still there, the new seedlings may fail in exactly the same place.
Start with the shape and location of the bare area
Along a walkway or play path: think traffic and compaction.
Under a tree: think increasing shade and root competition.
Low, soggy area: think drainage or overwatering.
Hot strip beside pavement: think reflected heat and dry soil.
Round or irregular dead patches: consider disease, insects, pet damage, or a spill before reseeding.
Do the screwdriver test
Push a long screwdriver into the bare area and then into healthy turf nearby. If the bare area is much harder, compaction may be limiting root growth and water movement. Loosening the soil or core aerating may be more important than simply increasing seed.
Check sunlight before reseeding
A lawn can thin gradually as trees mature and shade increases. If the site no longer receives enough light for the existing grass, repeatedly reseeding the same grass type will not solve the problem. The long-term fix may involve pruning, changing grass type where appropriate, or using a non-turf groundcover or bed in the deepest shade.
Prepare the soil so seed touches soil
Seed sitting on top of dead thatch or compacted soil has a much lower chance of establishing. Remove loose dead material, loosen the surface, level the area, and make sure the seed can contact soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination without turning it into mud.
Do not skip the diagnosis
The best repair sequence is simple: identify the cause, correct it, prepare the soil, choose the right seed for the site and season, seed at the labeled rate, and manage moisture through establishment.
