Fall Lawn Reset: What to Do Now Before Winter
Fall lawn care is not one-size-fits-all. The right move depends on your grass type, current lawn condition, local weather, and how much growing season is left.
Start with your grass type
Cool-season grasses such as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue often benefit from fall repair and overseeding. Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, and Bahia grass generally shift toward winter preparation instead of fall seeding.
Your fall reset
Keep mowing at the proper height, remove heavy leaf buildup, address thin areas, use fertilizer only when it fits your grass and timing, control weeds carefully, and adjust watering as growth slows.
What not to do
Avoid cutting the lawn too short, leaving thick layers of leaves in place, using the wrong fertilizer, or applying weed control without checking timing and grass safety first.
